The New Mom's Companion: Care for Yourself
while You Care for Your Newborn
I have loved being a mother from the earliest days of my motherhood, but I also
recognized early on that becoming a mother, not just being a mother, was more
work than I'd anticipated. This tiny baby's birth seemed to change not just my
body, but also my ability to think clearly, my relationship with my husband, and
my feelings about my own mother and other family members.
Motherhood changed many of my friendships, my attitudes about work, my sense
of myself as a woman, just about everything that made me me. I talked with
friends who had become mothers shortly before I had, and while they agreed that
this transition to motherhood was more than any of us had bargained for, we also
seemed to believe that motherhood should be a natural and positive experience
that we shouldn't find stressful.
The New Mom's Companion was written to help all first-time mothers adjust to
becoming a mother, whether you are the first or fourteenth among your circle to
have a baby, whether you are twenty-two or forty-two, whether you live next door
to your mother or two thousand miles away. It's for any new mother with
questions about mothering. It's not about the baby; it's about you.
